Stuwende kracht achter het Troostzakje is Hayat Jongenelen (°1979), moeder van 4 – Ilana (14), Aaron (9), Rianne (12) en Zias (7) – en leerkracht in de Stedelijke Basisschool De Beren in Berendrecht.

Na het overlijden van haar grootmoeder en moeder merkte ze dat ze enorm behoefte had om samen met haar kinderen te kunnen rouwen. Tegelijk waren er erg veel praktische zaken te regelen. Ze besloot haar kinderen daarbij te betrekken en zo is stap voor stap het idee van het Troostzakje ontstaan.
